ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Officials announced the arrests of two teens on Saturday in connection with the shooting last June of Rochester police officer Jeremy Nash.

Officer Nash, an 11-year veteran, suffered a non-life-threatening injury to his face.

According to officials, Nash is believed to have been an unintended target caught in a crossfire. He returned to work in November.

Tykyal Glover, 16, and Kamiu Blake, 17, of the City of Rochester have been arrested.

Glover is charged with assault in the first degree and criminal possession of a weapon in the second degree.

Blake has been charged with attempted assault, criminal possession of a weapon, and criminal possession of stolen property.

“The goal of this operation was not only to apprehend the persons responsible for the shooting of Officer Nash but also to apprehend those responsible for other violence in this neighborhood, to seize illegal firearms endangering the citizens of our community, and most importantly, to make this neighborhood safer for the residents. This focused internal task force approach is a strategy that we have developed to deal with ongoing violent disputes in our community. And we have used it successfully in other cases,” said Chief Michael Ciminelli, Rochester Police Chief.

According to officials, in addition to the arrests of Glover and Blake, the investigation resulted in approximately 28 illegal firearms seized between June 25, 2017 and March 12, 2018, including the weapons involved in the shootout on June 24. Investigators say 14 of these firearms are directly linked to Tykal Glover, Kamiu Blake and their associates.

“This neighborhood was being victimized by a series of violent acts. The fact is when those shots were fired on June 24 a police officer happened to have been struck, but the fact is there were numerous other pedestrians and motorists in the vicinity that could have been the unintended victim,” added Ciminelli.

“And we’ve always said that you have a small number of people in this community causing a large amount of the violence. And taking people associated with these and putting them in jail and taking their guns has certainly made a difference in these neighborhoods,” said Lt. Frank Umbrino, Rochester Police Lieutenant.

“I just think it’s horrible that they’re even able to get their hands on something like that. I hope that we can all have a better mindset as far as things getting into the city like guns and looking out for kids. I can only control my kids,” said Shana Fluitt, North Street neighborhood resident.

Officers also made an additional seven firearms arrests not directly related to the shooting of Officer Nash.

As a parent Shana says it’s hard to stomach how easy it is for kids to get possession of that many guns and bring it into the city.

“They still have temptations out here and they can still become a product of their environment. Just because I’m a good mother and he’s a good father still doesn’t mean that their friends have that same household setting. We can only do so much as parents and as a community we need to come together. Not just this community, any community as Rochester period,” added Fluitt.

Glover is being held on $100,000 cash and $250,000 bond. Blake is being held on $25,000 cash and $50,000 bond. Officers say the investigation is still ongoing and more arrests could be made in the connection to this case and group of individuals.
