Advocacy groups in Rochester want lawmakers to have a better understanding about how their policies affect victims of domestic violence.

A consortium held this morning in Rochester brought together experts in the field, legislators and members of law enforcement.

The 19th annual Legislative Breakfast was held at the Rochester Academy of Medicine and also featured personal accounts from victims of domestic violence.

Keynote speaker, Doctor Elizabeth Murray, stressed the importance of establishing policies to protect children.

"Growing up in a violent, chaotic household where you don't have an adult supporting you or caring for you, that causes dramatic physical health consequences down the road. So if we can work to mitigate the experience to get kids into the care they need, we can set the trajectory in the right direction," said Murray, a pediatrician at Golisano Children's Hospital.

Anyone in need of support is encouraged to contact the Willow Domestic Violence Center by calling 585-222-SAFE.
