The passing of New York Congresswoman Louise Slaughter has brought a great deal of grief to members of the Rochester community.

Our news reporter Breon Martin spoke to those taking time to remember her legacy.

ROCHESTER N.Y. – The work of New York Congresswoman Louise Slaughter hasn't gone unnoticed.

“She ran and she served in local, state, and federal government to serve her friends, families, and neighbors,” says Chairwoman of the Monroe County Democratic Committee, Jamie Romeo. “I think that the example that she showed for everyone across party lines shows the pure example of what it means to be a public servant.”

The longtime representative died Friday after being hospitalized for a concussion she received from a fall in her Washington D.C. home Wednesday, said Slaughter's chief of staff, Liam Fitzsimmons.

“She touched so many people in so many different ways,” says Brighton resident Candice Baker-Leit who paid her respect by gathering with other locals at the Rochester Democratic Staff Office on University Avenue—each supporter giving their final farewells and to sign cards for Slaughter’s family.

“We just simply wanted to open our doors and give people a place to come together,” said Romeo.

For advocates like Baker-Leit, she joined in on sharing her thoughts and memories of slaughter especially her passion for the arts and science. She said, “I always felt that she had her community at heart and I love the fact that she got involved because she wanted to save a grove of trees here in Western New York.”

Slaughter represented her upstate New York district for more than three decades, she is also best known for being a beacon of hope for women across the nation.

“She really plays that trail to allow women to really step into public service at a time when women were not stepping into public service right here in Monroe County with the county legislatures,” Romeo added.

For Slaughter to be the eldest member of Congress at age 88, those who knew her say she died, just as sharp as she’s always been. “She had an incredible impact on the party but she also had an incredible impact on this community as well.”

In hopes that someone can fill that void of support, Baker-Leit said, “I hope that we can find somebody that will be there to carry on her great legacy of advocacy for us.”

The Slaughter family has expressed their ultimate gratitude for the support during this difficult time.

Slaughter’s top aide says that details on funeral arrangements will be provided when they become available.
