Dozens in Chemung County are now ready in case there's an active shooter.

The Sheriff’s Office held a training course for faith-based groups at the Big Flats Community Center Wednesday.

It focused on a number of preventative measures, like making sure a plan is in place and everyone has a role.

“When an emergency situation does happen whether it's active shooter related or not, you know what to do,” said Chemung County Sheriff Christopher Moss. “People there know what to do so we don't have everybody panicking. Everybody can have a separate job, a responsibility and then an emergency situation can be handled a lot better, a lot easier for the folks that are involved in them."

The sheriff’s office will be holding another training course before the end of the month. That will be next Wednesday, at 6 p.m. at the Community Center.
