BATAVIA, N.Y. — Hector Navarro Miranda and his wife have made a life for themselves in Syracuse since fleeing their native Guatemala in the early 2000s. Now he's at risk of being deported.

A group of supporters drove from Syracuse to Batavia Tuesday as Miranda, who was arrested outside his home on December 21, awaited a deportation hearing.

The community has been supporting Hector's wife, Arely, and their three children. She's already in the deportation process, reporting to ICE officials once a month.

The couple is a pillar of their Syracuse community and say the current immigration system is too complicated and expensive, with people who contribute to their adopted homelands living with the fear of being taken away in handcuffs.

According to Department of Homeland Security’s 2017 fiscal report, ICE officers between Jan. 20 and Sept. 30, arrested nearly 111,000 people. It’s a 42 percent increase over the previous year.

Hector Miranda was able to post the $5,000 bond and will be reunited with his family, but he's scheduled to appear in court in Buffalo next month.
