Rochester's year-long celebration of 200 years since the birth of Frederick Douglass continued on Saturday.

SUNY Empire State College hosted a birthday celebration for the former slave turned abolitionist at the Rochester Academy of Medicine.

The free event treated those in attendance to a performance by the Akoma--Rochester Women’s African American

Gospel Choir, a cupcake buffet and photo opportunities alongside an iconic portrait of Douglass.

"He loved Rochester,” said Director and co-producer David Shakes. “We are steeped in his memory and many visionary and prophetic statements he made and editorials he published. We need to be proud of that and celebrate the fact that so much truth evolved and emerged and was spoken from this earth, this ground, this Rochester, New York."

We will continue to bring you stories throughout the year as the city honors the life of Frederick Douglass.
