SPENCERPORT, N.Y. — From their family home in Spencerport, 23-year-old Michael Booth's mother and stepfather, recall the November day he left to drive to work at Wegmans, only to end up in the hospital.

Michael’s mother, Jennifer Landes, says Michael was hit head-on by an elderly driver on Buffalo Road in the town of Gates. Investigators believe the other driver crossed the median. They say he was ticketed for multiple traffic infractions, frustrating Michael's family.

"They called me at home, and said he was in an accident, and when I got to the hospital, he was in surgery to have his spleen removed, and he had to have a bolt put in his head because of the pressure," Jennifer said. "The doctors said his brain injury is one of the worst they've ever seen. This gentleman was 86, and in the last few years, he has had multiple accidents, and that is what hurts the most is that this could have been prevented. Whether his family stepped in, whether insurance companies stepped in, saying, when is enough enough?"

Now, more than a month later, Michael is still in a coma, with severe brain trauma. His family knows him as a playful, gentle family man, someone who helped around the house. Despite his uncertain future, his parents cling to hope.

"He was a great kid to have around,” said Darren Landes, Michael’s stepfather. “Wery helpful with us, nice to work with him. We did a lot of stuff together. It’s very unfortunate that this happened to him."

For those interested, Michael's family has also launched a GoFundMe page, to help support him during this difficult time.
