ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Food-lovers in Rochester will be glad to hear that Uber is expanding.

Starting Tuesday, people in Rochester can open the free UberEATS app or website, order food from a participating local restaurant and have it delivered.

The service started in Buffalo in early October with more than 60 restaurants taking part there.

“It’s all about the convenience these days," said Uber spokesperson Danielle Filson. "People love just being able to push a button and get food, no need to talk to someone on the phone, say your credit card over the phone. It’s all electronic, it’s really easy and it’s kind of the future of food delivery.”

Customers can order their favorite dishes, place orders, pay with the card on file for Uber rides—there is a $5.99 delivery fee for orders regardless of size—and track the delivery progress.

“We’re excited to partner with UberEATS and get some great food out to some folks who’d like to stay at home and eat," said Randy Slifer of The Distillery, one of 35 Rochester restaurants participating so far.

Uber drivers now have the option of picking up passengers or delivering meals. They say it can mean more income during slow times.

“You’re driving around and you’re sitting somewhere and you’re not getting a call for a rider," said Peter Kelderhouse Jr. of Penfield. "This adds to that. So I imagine our downtimes will be a lot less. And the wait times will be a lot less.”
