WEBSTER, N.Y. -- A common element to almost every crash includes first responders at the scene.

The effects are keenly felt by paramedics and EMTs from Northeast Quadrant Advanced Life Support in Webster.

Some of them tended to the young victims in a fatal crash near Route 104 Wednesday night where a six-month-old infant was killed.

The company president says debriefing and counseling are offered to paramedics once they come from a disturbing scene.

He says seeing such tragedies can take a toll on his colleagues and it's getting harder to retain the younger employees.

“Each one is a little different. Me, I go walk with my dog," said Syed Ahmed Mustafa, Northeast Quadrant Advanced Life Support president. "So everyone has their own coping mechanism. What we try to avoid is alcohol, obviously suicidal tendencies, eating disorders, sleeping disorders, things like that. Right? Those are alarm bells that impact you many years beyond here."

Mustafa adds that the key to doing the job is finding the right release.
