ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Wednesday marked "BRA" day all across the country, a day set aside to learn more about breast reconstruction options from a local team of plastic surgeons—and to hear stories from women who've been through it.

"I didn't want to have to worry about breast cancer coming back in the other breast or just having a lumpectomy and finding it show up somewhere else," patient Lesa Probst said.

Probst was diagnosed with breast cancer last year. Following her surgery to remove both breasts, she began researching reconstruction options, and was comfortable in her choice.

"I was pleasantly surprised that the pain wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be and I was really able to manage quite well," said Probst.

Lesa's plastic surgeon was Dr. Ashely Amalfi from UR Medicine. Amalfi says each patient brings their own unique situation.

"It depends on their diagnosis, what sort of surgery they're going to have, if they're having chemotherapy before or after their surgery, if they're going to have radiation therapy," said Amalfi. "We sort of weigh all of those things and try to weigh the patients’ hopes, desires and really what their goals are."

Thousands of women across the country have mastectomys or lumpectomys, yet many of them are unaware of the breast reconstruction options that are available to them.

"We're actually able to take tissue from one part of the body, take it off and then reattach it to make a breast. And then there's much simpler options like implant reconstruction and the technology is incredible and ever-evolving," said Amalfi.

These procedures also covered by insurance. Knowing all this for Lesa Probst, made her journey and outcome with breast reconstruction a positive experience.

"I call it a better version of me, for me, it was the right decision,” said Probst.
