Our Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church honored emergency responders for their service Sunday.

Each year the church remembers the lives lost on 9/11 and pays tribute to first responders.

Churchgoers sent their thoughts and prayers to those dealing with the destruction of Hurricane Irma down in Florida as well.

Maria Patrevita says she is even more grateful for first responders as she looks to hear back from her relatives that decided to stay near Tampa.

“We`re worried, we`re calling all the time on the phone," said Patrevita. "We want them to be safe. If everybody works together. Like first responders, they`re  there to help anybody even completely strangers sometimes. They`re there to get you out of a mess.”

“It`s such an important role they play in our lives for our safety, our health and out welfare,” said Coordinator George Diquattro.

Local emergency responders were honored and celebrated with a bagpipe procession following the mass.

“For them to put their uniform on in the morning meaning they might not come home, they`re like heroes,” said Josiah Juels, of Greece.
