ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A neighbor saw an empty lot on Treyer Street and envisioned a safe and healthy place for kids to play. Evette Colon then teamed up with Ibero's Project Hope to make it a reality.
There's a new fence, a community garden, and a wall was painted white so kids could have a movie night. This summer, a Play Rocs pop up play space also sprung up. The street was closed and along with a Zumba session now and again, kids got lunch along with supervised activities. Now, with school almost here, they're gathering backpacks and supplies.
Colon says she's got many more plans for this lot, across the street from her house. It will take money and time, but in the meantime, she hopes others will see what she's done so far and feel inspired to do the same down on own streets.
