ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A former Chief of Staff for Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren is running for the New York State Senate.

Democrat Jeremy Cooney will challenge Republican incumbent Joe Robach in the 56th Senate District.

Cooney was previously a law clerk for former Gov. David Paterson and a staff aide for the late Rep. Louise Slaughter.

Cooney says he's committed to creating the upstate economy of tomorrow.

Robach has held the 56th state senate seat since 2003.

The district covers parts of Rochester and much of the northwest side of Monroe County.

Rochach responded Thursday with a statement:

"As your Senator, my focus will continue to be on serving the people of the 56th Senate District. Throughout my career, I have consistently fought on behalf of the people of this community for our fair share, affordability for seniors and working families, opportunity for all and parity for Rochester and Upstate New York. My record speaks for itself and I will continue to dedicate myself to providing excellent constituent service and being a voice for our community in Albany."
