IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Bishop Kearney made a surprising run last season to capture their first ever state softball title. That State title came behind a strong senior class and then-freshman pitcher Emily Phelan.

Phelan spent junior high as the ace of the Greece Olympia varsity staff. She then went about finding a high school.

"I've been in Greece my entire life and it was a little bit hard to make that choice because it's a big switch in the environment, but I knew it was what I had to do to benefit myself the best," she said.

The whole Phelan family is involved; mom Christie starred at Greece Athena and pitched at Niagara in the 90s, and is the Kearney pitching coach.

"It's nice because I have that resource with me all the time, it's not even a phone call or a text away, it's the room the next door away, so I can just walk over and be like, 'listen, it's really bothering me how this pitch is working, how can I fix it?' It's a good resource but also a fun environment to be around," Phelan said.

The Kings are the top seed in Class B as Sectionals start this week.
