Will Thomson birdied the 72nd hole to top Chris Blyth by one shot, becoming the third youngest NYS Amateur Champion ever.

Thomson nearly holed out for eagle on the 16th hole, knocking in a birdie to take a one-shot lead on Blyth, who is coming off the Rochester District title.

Blyth then made a short birdie putt on the par 5 18th to tie Thomson at six-under par. But the University of Texas commit hit his second shot inside 10 feet to set up an eagle putt, which came up just short. The brush-in made the 17-year old Thomson one of the youngest champions ever.

Both are former Vikings, Thomson leaving the school to play in Naples, Florida. He takes online classes and will take early enrollment to the University of Texas in January. Blyth graduated from Mendon, after playing high school golf with another Longhorn, Gavin Hall. Blyth then starred at St. John Fisher.

Thomson's caddy for the Amateur, yet another former Pittsford Mendon golfer, Gunnar Doyle, who is a junior at West Point.
