ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- A man accused of stabbing a woman several times in the upper body and neck pleaded not guilty during his arraignment in Rochester City Court.

Amari Brown is charged with second-degree murder and is held without bail.

In court paperwork, police stated that Brown stabbed 22-year-old Monica Sherman the night of July 24 at a home on Lyell Avenue. Sherman died several hours later.

"I think he doesn't deserve bail. He took a life for nothing. Monica was a sweet person. She may have did her thing, but she was a nice person," said Rickey Sherman, the victim's uncle.

"She'd help you out if she could, if you needed something, she'd give it to you. She was a good person, no matter what she did on the street."

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Aug. 16.
