ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Smoke detectors alerted people to a fire in their building early Wednesday morning.

It happened at the corner of Thurston Road and Milton Street.

Two adults and three kids made it out of the building safely, but two dogs died in the fire.

EMS crews did what they could at the scene to try to save the dogs.

No word yet how the fire started.

"The cause is still under investigation and the amount of damage to the building is still under investigation," said Adam Hudson, Rochester Fire Department. "There were smoke detectors going off which alerted them to get out of the building, so it's one of those things that is pretty important to have smoke detectors, working smoke detectors inside your house at all times."
