FARMINGTON, N.Y. -- New York State Police released additional details Friday about the shooting death of an off-duty parole officer in Canandaigua on October 4. The news conference came a day before the officer's family plans to speak to the media for the first time.

Troopers say Sgt. Scott Kadien of the Canandaigua Police Department was dispatched to check on the welfare of 48-year-old Sandy Guardiola, who had been out of work for a month because of a car accident. She was due to return that day, but never showed up. A fellow parole officer called in a welfare check.

Capt. Carolyn Mullin says Kadien knocked on Guardiola's apartment door, but no one answered.  Building management let him inside to assess the situation.

"He spoke to her, walked up to the side of the bed and asked her if she needed medical attention," Mullin said.

Mullin says that Guardiola moved her mouth, but made no sounds.

"He left the room and called on his radio to request an ambulance. When he entered the room again, he saw movement and Sandy Guardiola displayed a weapon. He made contact with her, 'don't Sandy don't,' and she discharged her weapon," Mullin said.

Acoording to police, Kadien took cover, and again told Guardiola to put her gun down. When she raised her gun, Kadien fired, shooting Guardiola three times.

Investigators say there is no body camera or surveillance footage of the incident.

Attorneys for Guardiola's family will hold a news conference with Rev. Al Sharpton on Saturday morning at the National Action Network's House of Justice in Harlem.  In the family's press release, attorneys says Guardiola was asleep when Kadien entered the residence. They state, "Guardiola was a Puerto Rican mother of two, who twice survived breast cancer."

Mullin says race was not a factor in the incident.

"This has nothing to do with race. This was an officer going to check the welfare of an officer.  He had no indication this was going to turn into a shooting," Mullin said.

Investigators say Guardiola was taking medication and was not responsive when Kadien walked into her apartment that day. They're still awaiting toxicology results.
