GATES, N.Y. -- A woman stands charged with murder after a deadly stabbing early Labor Day morning in the town of Gates.

Police said Doris Carrasquillo, 40, was in a domestic relationship with the victim, Kashmire Redd, 28.

Officers found Redd lying on the front lawn outside the Coccia Crescent apartment. Redd, who advocates say identified as a transgender man, was stabbed with a knife and was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Neighbors say both Carrasquillo and Redd moved in recently. Neighbors said they had called 911 before to report the couple fighting.  Police confirm they had responded to the address before, but no one came to the door.

One neighbor, Joanne, says she was woken up by the sound of arguing.

"That's when I got up. I got nervous," she said. "I hadn't called the police at that point, but I came out and sat there having a cigarette and when I looked over, I saw a body on the ground with the arms up and the head right in the grass. Like 'oh my God, someone's laying there.' Now I didn't know at that point whether it was over-drinking or what the problem was, but as I came down my sidewalk and up that sidewalk, there was blood all over and that's when I went in and called 911."

In Monroe County each year, more than 50,000 calls are made to 911 for domestic disputes. According to the Willow Domestic Violence Center, 30 to 50 percent of transgender people experience a form of intimate partner violence at some point in their lifetime.

"Discrimination and oppression against transgender people often leads to homelessness, and lack of family support leads increasing dependence on their abusive partners for protection, housing and income," said Jaime Saunders, Willow Center. "Additionally, many transgender individuals do not feel comfortable reaching out for help and telling their stories to their medical professional, mental health, law enforcement or service providers."

After her arrest, investigators say Carasquillo confessed to police. Carasquillo is due back in court later this week.
