GENESEO, N.Y. -- Investigators with the Geneseo police say seven students on the Geneseo Central School varsity football team took oyxcontin pills before Friday's game against Boliver-Richburg.

On Monday, school officials forfeited that game and the rest of the season for the varsity team as they do not have enough players to make up a squad.

Geneseo Police Chief Eric Osganian says the department is still interviewing those involved.

He says a locker room incident after the game led to the disclosure of the pills, but he was unsure if it was a heated discussion or scuffle.

Geneseo Varsity Team Captain, Kyle MacDonald, who says he had nothing to do with the pills, says the players who took them had reactions to the pills which prompted them to come forward to the coach after the win against Bolivar-Richburg.

One parent has confessed to his son handing out the prescription drug, but says the punishment needs to be reevaluated.

That parent and his son plan to meet with the Board of Education sometime this week to discuss the incident and what’s to come.

District Superintendent Tim Hayes says the players were found to be in violation of the district's Code of Conduct as well as Athletic Eligibility Standards.

"We’re faced with a situation where we have to forfeit the remaining games of our varsity season. And we have dedicated varsity athletes who are crushed by that and we understand that and none of us are happy to make a decision of this nature,” said Hayes. “Yet as we looked at what occurred, as we looked at what kind of decisions we could make, this was the decision that had to be made."

Hayes added that JV players could be moved up as that team is brand new this season, but it would then leave that squad depleted.

The junior varsity and modified football teams are expected to continue their seasons as scheduled.
