A Seneca County deer tour offered a unique Veteran's Day twist Sunday.

It was originally a former Army Depot from before World War II into the 90s.

“Take the tour to see all the bunkers here, hundreds and hundreds," said memorabilia collector Walter Young. "Ammo was stored here during all the wars, and it’s quite the thing to be right here in the Finger Lakes.”

It's now a park where people can take tours to learn its history and spot the famous Seneca White Deer.

“I didn’t know what was here, and I didn’t know all the history of the army depot," Victor resident Amy Lidestri said. "And all the preservation efforts they’ve put in for the white deer.”

The tour became a special living museum during Veteran’s Day Sunday, complete with Vietnam-era vehicles, military police reenactors and equipment dating back to World War I.

“I have an original War World II gas mask, oversea mask, first aid kits, all kinds of bayonets, weapons.” Young said.

Amy's father, 92-year-old Joseph Lidestri, narrowly missed combat, enlisting during World War II in 1945. He came for the tour, which he says he greatly enjoyed.

“It makes me feel great, even though I’m one of the lucky ones.” Joseph Lidestri said.

It was certainly a blast to the past, but not for the reason you’d expect.

“My father is a 40-year serviceperson at the depot," Ms. Lidestri said. "He retired in 1992, so I thought it’d be nice for him to come out and see the depot.”

That’s right. Joseph Lidestri worked there from the end of World War II, until the time the depot shut down.

“It was amazing to go into one that I probably worked in.” Mr. Lidestri said.

With all the history together in one place, memorabilia collector Walter Young hopes tour-goers use this Veteran’s Day to see another side of combat — in the homeland.

“I hope they don’t just see the deer and say look at all the pretty deer," Young said. "This is where we survived the country, right here.”
