An annual youth law enforcement competition took place Saturday in honor of the late Rochester police officer Daryl Pierson.

Whether searching a building for a gunman, or just settling an argument, police perform a wide variety of tasks every day.

“It exposes me to different ways and different departments, different ways of doing things," Brockport explorer Tommy Doty said. "It helps with confidence in the real world, and being assertive.”

But for teenage police explorers from across Monroe County, competing in the fourth annual Daryl Pierson Memorial games, it’s also a reminder of the ultimate sacrifice officers sometimes have to make…

“He put the community, protecting and serving the community, in front of his own personal safety," Interim Rochester Police Chief Mark Simmons said. "He went out and performed bravely. Unfortunately, he lost his life.”

R.P.D Officer Daryl Pierson was killed in the line of duty in September of 2014. The games are in his memory.

“It’s terrible because how that goes, but he was doing his job and he did what he could to protect the community that day.” Rochester explorer Ryland Zenelovic said.

And others agree.

“It’s a great way to honor a fallen hero.” Doty said.

The teens haven’t forgotten. But they also haven’t forgotten their competitive spirit.

“It’s a friendly competition for the most part, but it’s a little competitive because obviously you want to take it home.” Zenelovic said.

The feeling was mutual.

“You still want to win but- we’re going to win.” Doty said.
