A surveying class at SUNY’s Forest Technology School (SUNY-ESF) was recently observed by a delegation of foresters from India.
"Most of our participants are directors of forestry or ranger schools in India. They’re training the trainers," said Brian Houseal, of SUNY-ESF. "They’ve come here to take a look at how we train our forest technicians and foresters here at the Wanakena Ranger School, and on the main campus they’ll look at the overall educational structure that we’re using."
The long-term goal is to develop more sustainable forestry practices.
"Sustainable forestry practices is the aim. It is a global aim. It is an American goal. It is an Indian goal. We have to move in this direction and take from one another the best practices," said Anil Kumar, directorate of forest education.
Meera Lyer, principal of India’s Central Academy for State Forest Service, said the delegation was impressed with the administration and management of the curriculum and class work.
"For example, this session going on here, it’s all hands on training followed by practical sessions," said Lyer. "This is something we’re already doing but probably we can do it better learning from them."
The Indian government is committed to a major reduction in carbon emissions and forest management is a key to making it happen through sequestration.
