BUFFALO, N.Y. — Chippewa and Allen streets, two of the most popular nightlife locations in the city of Buffalo, will be without the extra police presence they're used to seeing on busy weekend nights.

According to the Buffalo Police Benevolent Association, those details have been cancelled thanks to cuts to police overtime.

Jonathan White with the Allentown Association says the amount of bars on Allen Street has grown significantly and the amount of crime has grown with it.

So the cuts came as a surprise considering the department had increased its presence to accommodate increasing crowds.

"The problem has grown, so the police department has recognized this issue and taken very good steps to try to control the situation as best they can," White said.

Last fall, residents and patrons said they were concerned about an increase in violent events along Allen Street and called on police to increase their patrols in the neighborhood.

Common Council President Darius Pridgen says he hasn't seen any documentation of the cuts, but is working to find out why the cuts happened and what other areas will be impacted.

A spokesperson for the Buffalo Police says that "From time to time patrols are altered for a number of different reasons, including different hot spots or areas of crime."

The department did not provide any further information on when or whether the detail will be restored.
