GENESEO, N.Y. — Students at SUNY Geneseo are speaking out after a sociology professor presented a controversial photo presentation in class.

Professor Dr. David Sorbello allegedly asked students to identify transgender women in a collection of photos titled “Female or Shemale” during a class October 18.

Jillian Sternberg, a student in Sorbello’s class who on Friday posted an image from the class to social media said Sorbello “made a comment afterwards saying ‘you guys look really uncomfortable,’ and I was like, ‘well, doesn’t that mean that’s a sign?’” she said.

Sorbello allegedly said the presentation was “partly for humor and partly to teach about sexual dimorophism but that wasn’t really emphasized,” Sternberg said.

She and fellow student Jessica Friedman urged the professor to apologize but none has been offered.

The university has released a statement saying it is “taking the matter very seriously and are gathering the facts to determine if and what action is warranted.”

Friedman suggested the faculty at SUNY Geneseo go through safe-zone training.

Another student, Leliana McDermott, is a transgender woman and said Sorbello’s comments put shame on the transgender community.

“I feel like it’s inappropriate because the website he was using used the term ‘shemale,’ which is a really bad slur and I think it’s unnecessary to divide people by how they look,” McDermott said.

Neither Sorbello nor the university have responded yet to requests for comment on the incident or any future action that might result.
