It is always a big deal when Williamsville North and Lancaster square off.

The two squads met in last season’s Section VI Class AA finals with the Legends pulling out a 35-6 victory. They met again in week three of the regular season in a Game of the Week matchup that saw Lancaster pull out a 34-26 win.

On Friday, the Legends and Spartans will face off yet again in Spectrum’s Game of the Week, this time fighting for a trip to New Era Field.

The Legends (7-1) have won the past two Section VI Class AA titles and are confident they can make it back to championship weekend again.

“I mean, we're trying to get a three-peat,” said Lancaster senior receiver Brian Martin. “We’re not trying to be the first class in two years that hasn’t won the section.”

To get there, the Legends will have to take down the Spartans for the third time the last year. Unlike their previous two meetings, this one will be under the lights in Lancaster, something the Legends are really looking forward to.

“Our fans are some of the best in all of Western New York and they're going to add energy and just bring our players up,” said junior quarterback Gianluca Fulciniti.

Williamsville North (6-2) is not going to make the Legends’ path to a third-straight title easy. Since starting the season 2-2, the Spartans have ripped off four straight wins, outscoring opponents by an average of 13 points per game. North’s players are fired up for a chance at redemption over the Legends.

Matching up in the postseason also adds a little extra urgency, not only to try to win a title but to also avoid having your season, and, in the case of both teams’ seniors, careers end with a loss.

“Everyone's practicing harder,” said Will North senior Scott Becht. “I mean, everyone practices hard usually, but you know, knowing it could be your last game ever, any day of the week it's just, you've got to go hard every day.”

The Spartans and Legends kick off at 7:30 Friday Night. Coverage can be found on Spectrum News.
