Police in Fredonia say it started as a call for a person with a medical condition barricaded in a bathroom. It ended with a man shot and killed by a police officer.

Fredonia Police Chief Bradley Myers says Officer Nathan Scriven went into a home on Liberty Street in the village where a man attacked him.

Scriven moved outside, but the chief says the suspect continued to threaten him, and that's when he shot and killed the suspect.

Police say Scriven and other people inside the home Monday afternoon were not hurt.

The lawyer for the police department's union says a knife was recovered from the scene. He says Scriven “is an experienced member of the police department."

The police chief says it's more than a decade since something like this has happened in the village.

"These are never easy calls to handle," Myers said. "It's a difficult call. It's unfortunate that at the end of the day, it had the result that it did."

The investigation has been turned over Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office with help from State Police.

Scriven is on leave during the investigation, which is standard in any case like this.
