You've probably already set back your clocks for daylight saving time. But have you also checked your smoke detectors?

Fire departments across the region are reminding people to change the batteries on their smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, which should be changed every six months.

Having a working smoke alarm is critical to preventing fire-related deaths. The National Fire Protection Association says three out of five fire deaths occur in homes without working smoke alarms.

"Burning food or smoking in the building that'll set off the smoking alarm, and then people take it down. But people need to remember to put it back up. Their whole family depends on that smoke alarm. If you're in an apartment the whole rest of the residents depend on that smoke alarm," said Dave Abell, an Endicott Fire Department lieutenant

You should also be testing your smoke alarm and carbon monoxide detectors every month to ensure they are working.
