A crowded field looking to challenge congressman Tom Reed this November.

Six candidates vying for the democratic nomination faced off in a debate Wednesday at the Elmira Economic Opportunity gymnasium.

The candidates include retired cardiologist Linda Andrei, attorney Max Della Pia, teacher Rick Gallant, small-business owner Ian Golden, professor Tracy Mitrano and attorney Eddie Sunquist.

They fielded questions on topics ranging from the economy to the second amendment.

Chemung County Democratic chair Jim Carr said it's going to take a major effort to win the 23rd district seat.

"We want to give the community of Chemung County and Steuben county, because it's a cohost even, the opportunity to meet the candidates but to not only meet them but ask them questions that are pertinent to them and the communities they live in." said Carr.

The Democratic primary is set for June 26.
