After the Florida shooting, some local lawmakers are calling for increased state money for school resource officers.

State Sen. Patrick Gallivan wants funding to expand the program to allow for at least one SRO in every school district across the state.

With 700 districts, they're still working out all the details.

But many local schools, including Niagara Falls, say SROs are critical, and the additional financial support would help with tight budgets.

Niagara Falls has one SRO at the high school, and non-armed safety officers in the halls of the secondary and a couple elementary schools in the district.

"We can never let our guard down. We can never be complacent. We can never be relaxed about the necessary physical security efforts we take, we cannot take things for granted, and if we see something that is even a bit out of the ordinary, we have to report it," said Mark Laurrie, Niagara Falls superintendent.

Laurrie says their security measures include cameras inside and out of the schools, that are also tied in with the police department.

They also require everyone to be buzzed into the buildings.
