ALBANY, N.Y. -- Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul is urging leaders and New Yorkers to come together following the Florida school shooting.

Hochul spoke at the Wilborn Temple First Church Sunday during a Black and Puerto Rican legislative caucus church service.

She touched on gun reform, equal pay, and -- what she called -- the need for a non-discrimatory criminal justice system.

Hochul also highlighted her own religious beliefs, and why she believes it's important to have hope and faith, even in times of crisis.

"In today's day we're still burying children in high schools because nobody else has the courage to do what we've done here in the state of New York, and that is to ban those weapons of lethal destruction. Can we do that together, once and for all as a nation?" Hochul said.

Hochul will face opposition in this year's Democratic primary from New York City Council member Jumaane Williams who announced his candidacy for the position last week.
