NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. -- The Military Road Wegmans parking lot was busy Tuesday morning, but not with the kind of traffic it normally sees.

Jonathan Schultz, an emergency manager with Niagara County, says a tanker tried to make a turn in the lot Monday night and hit a light pole, causing a liquid hydrogen leak.

"It's a highly flammable gas. That's why we were concerned as we were moving it off of the concrete abutment with the metal-to-metal contacts that were in place," said Schultz.

As emergency crews worked to contain the leak, a state of emergency was put into effect, as was a shelter-in-place order for people who live within a 1,500-ft. radius of the store.

Wegmans and a few homes were evacuated and part of Military Road was shut down.

The clean-up itself wrapped up by the evening.

Hydrogen was transferred from the leaking tanker to another.

The first truck was sent to a site for storage and final cleaning.

The investigation is ongoing.
