BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Recycling experts in Buffalo urge people to think twice before throwing away broken items.

KnowledgeFire, a non-profit based out of the city's west side, is encouraging people to visit the Dare to Repair Cafe.

The Cafe is a free service offered once a month where volunteers help fix a range of items like small appliances, tools and bicycles.

Co-sponsored by the city of Buffalo, the Dare to Repair Cafe is another initiative that is being taken to encourage people to recycle.

At the first Dare to Repair Cafe held in North Buffalo last month, almost 200 pounds of items were diverted from landfills.

"Some of the items are precious, antiques and what not but some are just, can't figure out why it's not working, a toaster or a hair dryer we saw," said Susan Attridge, City of Buffalo Director of Recycling. "And rather then buy a new one, they can come here and get it fixed and keep using it."

The next Dare to Repair Cafe will be held on November 18th.
