NEWFANE, N.Y. — It's the new reality for parents in Newfane, kids riding on the school bus without an aide, and many parents are not happy about it.

Dozens of people protested outside a school board meeting Tuesday night, begging the district to bring back the 12 aides, who were fired before the start of the school year and replaced with cameras.

The school says it had to use that money to pay for the higher price the bus company is now charging.

However, parents say a price tag can't be put on safety.

"I don't mean to be super emotional, but one day of my child's life being at risk is too much for me and I can only imagine that's how everyone feels in this situation," said parent Tracy Oshealicinio.

There are still four bus aides on staff who are rotated between routes.
