LEWISTON, N.Y. — A propane leak near a gas station caused a school to be evacuated early Thursday.

Hazmat crews had to burn off the last of the propane.

This happened at Jay's Place on Walmore Road sometime before 8:30 a.m.

County officials say the owners discovered propane leaking from a break in the valve of an 18,000 gallon tank.

As a precaution, authorities evacuated everyone in the area, including Tuscarora Elementary School.

All the students were escorted safely to Niagara-Wheatfield High School.

"Air monitoring has been going on since we got here and there’s been no issues except near the tank where they had the small leak, and really there’s been no issues going outside of that area,” said Jonathan Schultz, Niagara County Emergency Services director.

Officials don't know what caused the break in the valve.
