PEMBROKE, N.Y. — A sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a man after reports of a shooting at a restaurant in Genesee County late Wednesday.

The suspect was identified Thursday as Keith Kent, 61, of Albion.

Few new details were provided Thursday morning, other than to confirm that deputies knew a man with a gun was in the parking lot of the Log Cabin restaurant on Gilmore Road before they arrived.

It was the first officer-involved shooting in Genesee County in more than 40 years.

The call came in around 11 p.m. Wednesday night and there were nine people in the restaurant, including workers, at the time, confirmed Genesee County Undersheriff Greg Walker.

Walker says the first deputy to arrive at the scene made contact with the suspect in the parking lot. That’s when the suspect pointed his gun at the deputy, Walker said. That deputy then shot the suspect, who died at the scene.

“When they arrived on scene, they confronted the suspect out in the parking lot,” Walker said. “Demands were yelled to him, he pointed a handgun at one of our officers who then took a shot that killed him.”

There were no other injuries during the incident.

The suspect's name is not being released as notifications are still being made to the family, Walker said.

He also confirmed that Genesee County officers do have body cameras and that any footage captured during the incident is under review.

Walker also said that preliminary information suggests the suspect was asking where the police where and was looking for them.

State Police Major Edward Kennedy of Troop A reiterated there wasn't a lot of information the police could provide at this time. The crime scene is still active and under investigation.

"This is a tragedy for everyone," he said. "That's the best we can give you right now. We're not going to comment on the number of rounds, who fired, how many rounds were fired."
