One of Western New York's biggest philanthropists is being recognized for his hard work.

Russell Salvatore was presented with the "Humanitarian of the Year" plaque by Erie County Legislator, John Bruso and other local veterans. Salvatore says he doesn't hesitate to help.

Veterans at the VA Hospital asked him for a $500 donation toward new vans for patients. Instead of writing the check, Salvatore called up a dealership and had a $300,000 fleet of new vans delivered.

"My life has been in the hospitality business for close to 70 years. The people have made me what I am today. You know, you patronize me for all these years so I'm giving you back the money that you're going to get," said Salvatore. "I don't need no money when I go up to heaven. I hope one of you guys are going to buy me a free cocktail when I get up there, right?"

Two local veterans groups were also honored for their volunteer work.
