This year, New York could overhaul a tax credit that's supposed to encourage forest preservation on privately-owned land. About 75 percent of New York's state forests fall into that category- totaling more than 14 million acres. Currently, landowners who get state-certification for managing or harvesting their land sustainably can get a property tax exemption. But it involves a lot of paperwork, and critics also say some of the standards need updating.
