PINELLAS COUNTY -- A small plane crashed in Clearwater Sunday morning, according to the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened just before 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of North Keene Road at Sunset Point Road.

A preliminary investigation shows that two men were aboard the plane, which was traveling from an airport in Zephyrhills to Clearwater Airpark.

The plane's engine started acting up and, a half-mile before the landing strip, the pilot knew they couldn't make it any farther.

He tried to land on North Keene Road. The plane clipped a tree, which reportedly caused the plane to spin and crash into a nearby fence.

Resident Maureen Ramirez was by the street picking up yard sale signs when she saw the plane coming toward her.

"I heard a big boom and it took a hard right and stopped itself in a wall there," she said. "So he didn't hit any traffic, he didn't hit any pedestrians or anything, he did a good job stopping the plane."

Ramirez saw two men open the cockpit doors, then jump out of the plane. Both of them were unharmed.

The Sheriff's Office said it didn't believe the pilot was impaired in any way. The FAA has taken over the investigation.
