CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. -- The off-duty parole officer found dead after an officer-involved shooting in Canandaigua was identified Thursday as Sandra Guardiola, a 48-year-old who came to the Department of Corrections from the New York City area in 2015.

State police said that a fellow parole officer asked to check in on Guardiola's welfare, and that staff at the Pinnacle North Development lakeside apartment complex let Canandaigua City Police into the apartment when Guardiola did not respond.

While earlier reports indicated an exchange of gunfire between the police officer and parole officer, troopers now handling the investigation will not confirm gunfire was exchanged.

The Canandaigua officer, who was not injured, was identified only as a 15-year veteran. They remain on paid administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

Bill Van Damme, who owns the adjacent restaurant, says his wife saw a Canandaigua city police officer with a bulletproof vest and rifle heading towards the complex.

“My wife yesterday was really disturbed,” said Van Damme. “It’s something we don’t really expect here in Canandaigua. As a business owner, I always think about what could happen if someone got out of hand and is disorderly. It is a little scary.”
