AUSTIN, Texas – October 11 is National Coming Out Day, which marks a landmark day for LGBTQIA rights across the country. There is no shortage of ways to celebrate locally.

Thirty years ago the day went down in history as one of the largest demonstrations in Washington, D.C. for gay rights, according to Austin Family Counseling. More than 500,000 people showed up for the march that ended with the founding of several gay rights groups.

The day now unites the LGBTQIA community, with the aim of empowering them to come out to the closest while fostering a supportive environment.

In Austin, the Strong Family Alliance is hosting an event to encourage parents to show support for their LGBTQIA children. The event starts at 7 p.m. and will take place at 505 W Louis Henna Blvd.

Then, on October 12, the event will continue for National Parents Coming Out Day with guest speakers from authors to activists.
