Orange County seniors took in a bit of history Tuesday morning.

I love the senior games,” said Alice Giro of Middletown. “We have a lot of Fun, we win prizes and they feed us."

About 100 seniors participated in the historical scavenger hunt at Museum Village. The event is a part of the Orange County Senior Games, which is celebrating its 35th year.

“A lot of times people don’t get around their block or out of their village or out of their town,” said Tom McNamara of Greenwood Lake. “You can see the whole county if you get involved in senior games.”

“The senior games are athletic competitions, social events, museum tours, nature hikes,” said Orange County Senior Games Chair Tom Quinlisk. “Basically whatever we can think of that would be fun for the seniors.

The games began back in September but a handful of events will go on through November. The goal is to give seniors opportunities to challenge their bodies and minds, while helping them build new bonds of friendship.

“A lot of us seniors if we can do anything we’re sitting watching TV or using our computers,” said McNamara. “And we don’t get out and enjoy the beautiful weather and the scenery, the changing of the leaves.”

"You come from all the different areas in Orange County so you make friends, lasting friends,” said Giro. “Each year is like a reunion because you get to see the people again if you haven’t seen them all year.”

“What we’re offering them, the friendship the social stuff, getting out into the community is important because if it wasn’t important they wouldn’t come back every year,” said Quinlisk. “But we have every year we see the same folks come back year after year.”
