NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- Newburgh residents are being asked to conserve water ahead of the shutdown of the Catskill Aqueduct.

City Manager Michael Ciaravino says it’s important for residents and businesses to conserve drinking water.

The city has been getting its water supply from the Catskill Aqueduct since 2016 after it was discovered that the water in Washington Lake was contaminated with PFOS.

Starting October 15, the New York City Department of Environmental Protection is shutting down the Catskill Aqueduct for 10 weeks.

During that time, the city's supply will come from Brown's Pond.

Some steps you can take to conserve water include:

  • Taking shorter showers and baths
  • Avoid watering your lawn
  • Only use the washing machines for full loads of laundry
  • Avoid letting the water run when brushing your teeth
  • Don't wash your car
