NEWBURGH, N.Y. -- There was a complicated demolition for a building that started collapsing in Newburgh.

The city manager says 49 DuBois Street was already on a list of distressed properties to be taken down by the city.

The fire department inspects the properties on a regular basis, so the city can adjust demolition priorities as needed.

Crews were already working to take down a vacant home on Grand Street.

With attached buildings on either side of the DuBois Street property, the city manager says it will cost the city more.

"It's really a situation where in the absence of the funding required and the monies on reserve, we have to, by necessity, take the most conservative approach with regard to the demolition dollars that we can allocate,” said Newburgh City Manager Michael Ciaravino.

Newburgh officials have been working to sell these blighted properties, in order to get them back on the tax rolls and keep the city from spending more on demolitions.
