MONTICELLO, N.Y. -- A division of the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office celebrated their 50th anniversary.

At the county legislature's monthly meeting Tuesday, the Patrol Division was honored with a distinguished achievement award.

The legislature says this award honors their committment to the safety of those in the county.

Sullivan's sheriff says the patrol has been beneficial to properly helping those in the community.

"There were just deputies, you could be in the jail, tomorrow you're sent out on patrol, thre was no distinct division. And 50 years ago, they decided we need a road patrol with different trainings, with specific duties, and they separated the two," said Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff.

The patrol may have been around for a few decades, but the sheriff's office says their office as a whole has been around for more than 200 years.
