A suspect is in custody in connection with an assault police say happened in Port Jervis over the weekend.

Early Monday morning, a 29-year-old woman said she was attacked from behind, pulled down an embankment to the D&H Canal tow path, and assaulted. The victim said she fought back and her attacker fled.

That evening, upon execution of a search warrant, police arrested Lionel Williams, 44 of Port Jervis. He's charged with attempted first degree rape and attempted first degree sexual abuse. Williams' arraignment is pending in city court.

Port Jervis police also say early Saturday morning, a woman was attacked from behind and sexually assaulted near the intersection of Fowler Street and Barcelow Street. The investigation is ongoing into that incident.
