Bicyclists rode on "New Paltz River to ridge trail" for the first time Saturday.

The 6 mile loop trail will host bikers and hikers alike. The President of Open Space Institute, who founded the trail, and the President of Mohonk Preserve, where the trail was built, were present alongside side local legislators for the ribbon cutting.

They say the trail has something for all ages.

"We've designed it to be family friendly,” said President & CEO of Open Space Institute Kim Elliman. “So you can go out, come back in a loop and its six or seven miles, that might be long enough for younger people but it’s also not so physically demanding. And if you think about it on your way out you're looking at the ridge and all that protected land and just the beauty of the Shawangunks. And coming back you're going through farm fields, so it’s just a wonderful experience of wilderness and pastoral landscapes."

The trail connects the village of New Paltz with the pathways of the scenic Shawangunk Ridge.
