SAN ANTONIO — A Bexar County Sheriff Office detention deputy has been arrested for official oppression and assault bodily injury to an inmate.

According to the sheriff’s office, 23-year-old Tavian Gloeckler was involved in an incident in the adult detention center regarding mistreatment of an inmate, but after a preliminary investigation into this incident by the Public Integrity Unit, investigators placed him into custody.

“In the interest of maintaining public trust, we moved swiftly and decisively in this case,” Sheriff Javier Salazar said. “As I’ve stated before, misconduct in any form will not be tolerated. We will provide full details as soon as possible.”

Gloeckler was hired in May 2017 and will be placed on immediate unpaid administrative leave in accordance with policy and procedures pending further criminal investigation by the public integrity unit.

"From my respect, and from my command staff's respect, we just keep making an example of these things as they happen. It's not going to be taken lightly, if you want to act like a thug we're going to treat you like a thug and you're going to go to jail, no matter if you wore this uniform at one point in your life or not,” said Salazar.

BCSO Internal Affairs will be conducting a separate but concurrent administrative investigation into this incident.

"If there is any sort of a culture going on this exactly what's happening today is what cultural change looks like. Sometimes it gets ugly and sometimes you have to make an arrest and let the chips fall where they may. You handle it appropriately as it comes along,” said Salazar.
