The bodies of a father and son swept away in the Neversink River have been recovered.

State police and other agencies announced Monday the bodies of 46-year-old Marco Avila and 9-year-old Marcos Avila were recovered downstream from where both were caught in the currents on Saturday.

The father had tried to swim from shore to rescue his son when a raft the boy was on overturned by the Oakland Park campground.

A 16-year-old on that raft was pulled safely to land, but the father and son disappeared in the water without life jackets.

Officials say family and friends who were waiting and hoping for a rescue are now receiving counseling.
