The owners of Hurd's Family Apple Farm in Modena have been on a mission for 25 years. But it's not just to sell delicious apples.

"We're apple farmers, but then we're also teachers at the same," said Sarah Potenza, the manager of her family's farm.

She means that literally, too, Potenza being a math teacher and her mother a former English teacher. Together, they help teach families, school groups and campers about farming and healthy eating. Their methods aren't boring either, using fun and interactive methods to engage with kids.

"It gets them interested in healthy eating, and apples are really healthy eating," Potenza said.

This year, though, things are going to be a little bit different. Potenza says the farm's mission is expanding in exciting ways.

"There's the healthy eating part, and then there's the exercising, which is this obstacle course," she said.

The obstacle course is inspired by American Ninja Warrior and is environmentally friendly; it's made from repurposed farm equipment. It's going to be different, but it still fits right in line with the farm's theme for this season, "Get moving on the farm."

"We want to encourage anyone who's interested in the Ninja Warrior thing to come out, learn about farming, but then also have fun on this obstacle course," Potenza said.

The farm and all its outdoor activities open on Saturday and run through apple season up until November.
